Meet the mdgroup Event Services Team: Gemma Wicks, Global Project Manager

This week we’re delighted to introduce you to Gemma Wicks, Global Project Manager for our Event Services Team.

Each week we’ve been speaking to a different member of the team, so you can get to know them as we get ready to start organising and hosting physical events for our clients again.

The last few months have been a period of huge adjustment, for us and everyone in the clinical industry. Not being able to travel or meet in person has meant we’ve been busy experimenting, innovating, and refining the way in which we organise virtual events to ensure clinical trials are able to continue. We’re so proud of our team, our clients, and our partners for the phenomenal job they’ve done!

We caught up with Gemma to ask her about her favourite city to travel to, her favourite events venue, and the lessons she’s learnt during lockdown.

Gemma, what’s your favourite city to meet for an event and why?

I have been incredibly fortunate to have travelled to some amazing places with my job over the last few years, which has allowed me to achieve a personal goal of visiting 30 different countries before I am 30. Every city you travel to is unique in its own way, so I have really struggled to narrow this down and just pick one!

I think I would have to say Prague, purely because I think the architecture of the city makes it look quite magical, especially at night seeing the castle lit up with the twinkly lights.

What’s your favourite venue you have worked in and why?

The Intercontinental Sydney. This hotel is located just a stone’s throw away from Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, so waking up to those views every morning was quite literally breath-taking.

The hotel public areas and meeting space were incredibly well-appointed, the staff could not do enough for you and the food – oh, the food was amazing! You could spend hours at breakfast just trying everything that is on offer!

What skills or lessons have you learned during lockdown?

I wouldn’t say that I have learned a new skill as such, but more realised how key it is to keep up the communication whilst working remotely with the team and other employees.

I am very much a people person and not seeing the team on a day to day basis and asking questions or getting their thoughts on something across our desks has been a new way of working to adapt to.

Keeping that conversation going virtually is more important now than it has ever been before, but I do look forward to seeing everyone again.
